Power up Mew? 3 Tricks/Hacks to catching Mew (2/2)

Some tasks are very frustrating and tedious, and it requires lot of patience and hard work to complete.  However, we work hard and work smart too.  There are smart ways/hacks to go about completing the quests/tasks to catch Mew...

Task 1: Perform 10 Raids (A Mythical Discovery [6/8] )

This task could be a arduous one, considering the amount of raid passes you would be limited to per day (1 per day).  Things could be even more trickier if you happened to have few gyms around your area.

So we have to take note of a few facts for us to plan and strategise in such a way that we complete at least 1 raid a day.

  • We are only required to perform a raid, not win or battle in one.  If gyms are in short supply in your area, all you need to do is surrender your raid pass while you are passing by 1 without even battling the boss. You can even do that while commuting to work/school.
  • Raid doesnt last throughout the day... i,e no raid after 7pm in Singapore.  Therefore for those working, best timing to complete this task is before work or while you are commuting!
  • There is more than 1 way to get raid pass, cough Premium Raid Pass and Ex-Raid Pass
  • People with higher level of gym badge have a better chance to get ex-raid pass.
  • Ex-raid pass are frequently located at parks or at sponsored location

Task 2: Perform an Excellent Throw (A Mythical Discovery [7/8] )

Niantic Lab have rated throw landing on the green circle by "Nice", "Great" and "Excellent", based on size of green circle (smaller would earn a greater rating).  Landing on the smallest the green circle would get would earn the excellent rating.

No doubt, part of earning a excellent rating would depend on skills, i.e curve ball throw and ensuring the curve ball land in the center of the pokemon.

There are ways to increase your chances of getting an excellent throw.  That way would be to choose Pokemon that would appear bigger on the screen.  My favourite Pokemon for that would be Wailmar.

Picking the right Pokemon is essential because the smallest green circle would be magnified.

Task 3: Catching 50 Pokemon using a Berry ( A Mythical Discovery [7/8] )

It is very common to realise that you are out of Razz berry before you even know it, thanks to the fact it makes catching Pokemon so much easier and feeding berries to Pokemon in gym giving that extra stardust.  But the good news is that you don't necessary need to use Razz berries, other berries would do though it is a waste, i.e. Nanab Berries or even Pinap Berries.

Besides these tasks, there are other hard to complete tasks not covered.  Click this link to find out more.

One last tips to consider, you might want to practice more on catching in AR mode before the big day.  Hint hint, Mew would be appearing in AR and it is not as visible as it seems ;)

Power up Mew? 3 Tricks/Hacks to catching Mew (1/2)

Have you still not gotten your Mew yet?  Are you still stuck in some quests/tasks which impossible to complete/not worth the hassle to catch?  After all, it is just another Pokemon, should you pass up on catching Mew?

Mew is not the most powerful Pokemon out there

Well, Mew is not just another Pokemon! Ya ya ya, Mew is the most ancient, powerful, mythical, one of a kind blah blah... No doubt, Mew is strong with a stats of:

Attack   : 210
Defence: 210
Stamina: 200
Max CP: 3,090

But to be brutally honest, there are better options out there. Eg. Dragonite for Attacking or Defending Gym (Higher IVs: 3,581 and Attack, 263), Blissey for Defending Gym (Massive amount of HP) or Tyranitar which is very painful and durable (Attack: 251 and Defence: 212), etc.... Not forgetting the terror and prowess of its counterpart, MewTwo.

And not forgetting there being no other ways to capture Mew, the only way to get more Mew candy would be to buddy it (a gruelling 20 Km per candy) or Rare Candy.

Still we should catch and power it up

Despite saying so, we should not miss the chance to catch it as it may be the only chance for us to catch it.  Which brings us one step closer to completing our Pokedex.

Knowing that it is not the strongest Pokemon out there, Mew still plays a important role as a utility powerhouse in your combat team.

Mew being advertised as the Pokemon that contain the genetic composition of all Pokemon, it is able to use moves of all elements.  That includes painful, high damage ultimate like Hyper Beam (Normal), Blizzard (Ice), Solar Beam (Plant), Psychic (Psychic), Focus Blast (Fighting) more...

Bearing these into consideration, there would be instances where you would be lacking specialist in certain elements.  Mew would come in and serve as a strong reinforcement to that.

The ultimate verdict is that should you have enough rare candy, or you travelled a lot, you should power up Mew.

6 Things you have to do before starting Mew's A Mythical Discovery

As of March 2018, Pokemon Go team have launched an update, featuring the chance to assist Professor Willow in seeking and capturing the mythical, ancient Pokemon Mew.

The challenge is split into 8 Special Research Quests with a series of task to complete before being able to capture the legendary pokemon, Mew.  More often than not, you may end up pre-completing tasks before it reaches you and having to painstaking re-consolidate valuable resources which is very time-consuming.

Therefore it would be advisable to look ahead on the tasks to be completed and strategise from.

Also, here are some valuable tricks and tips you wish you have done earlier to make the journey smooth.

1. Change buddy Pokemon to Magikarp and do not evolve your magikarp

To fulfill: (Quest: Task)
A Mythical Discovery (2/8):  Earn 2 Candies walking your Buddy
A Mythical Discovery (4/8):  Earn 5 Candies Walking your Buddy
A Mythical Discovery (6/8):  Evolve a Magikarp

In the 6th Quest, one of the task on hand is to evolve a Magikarp to the almight Gyarados.  To do so, a tremendous amount of Magikarp candys is required (400).  If you are far from it, it is advisable to start early by increasing the amount of Magikarp candy you have, either through catching wild Magikarp (if you are seriously short of candy, use pinap berry) or assigning Magikarp as your buddy at the start.

The good news is that, Magikarp belong to the lowest tier group that require the lowest amount of distance (in Kilometer, KM) per candy.  Usually Magikarp require 1km per candy, but perhaps because of world wide celebration of Kanto Region Pokemon, the distance is halve to 0.5km.  This mean that you can easily earn 2 or 5 candies for the task in the 2nd and 4th quest in no time.

However, if you have enough Magikarp candies, do not evolve your Magikarp yet till you reach the 6th Quest.  Meanwhile, for the tasks to earn candies while walking your buddy, you may want to consider the following pokemons in the lowest tier.

2. Standby to your incubator and stock up on 2 Km eggs
A Mythical Discovery (2/8):  Hatch 3 eggs

Unless you do lots of walking or travel a lot outdoor, hatching 3 eggs could prove to be a challenge.  So it would be great to hold on 2 Km eggs first and start to incubate it at the start of the 2nd Research Quest.

Otherwise, if you can time it properly, you can concurrently use 2x limited uses incubator on 5km/10km eggs at the start and the unlimited incubator on 2km.  Come 2nd Research Quest, all 3 eggs would hatch at the same time.

3. Standby a lucky egg and keep stocks of Pokemon to evolve

A Mythical Discovery (4/8):  Evolve 20 Pokémons
A Mythical Discovery (6/8):  Reach Level 25

A lucky egg is an item that let you earn double the XP for 30 mins.  As evolving a Pokemon brings a significant amount of XP, (500XP), it is often used in the early days to Pidgey Farming (quick way to gain XP and level up).

What better way to complete the task of evolving 20 Pokemons by doubling your returns on XP.  Of cos, in the process, do make sure you have enough Pokemon to evolve in a go. And do take note that if you are evolving new Pokemons (not registered in the Pokedex), you will gain an additional 500XP (1000 XP after lucky egg effect).

For those who have not reach Level 25, this is a good chance to level before you reach the 6th Quest.

4. Know which Pokemon Ditto could transform into

A Mythical Discovery (5/8):  Catch a Ditto

Catching a Ditto is one of the toughest task in the whole of Mew's Quest.  Not only there are no frequent place of appearance, Ditto would be randomly transformed into other Pokemon and it really boils down to luck to capturing it.

Though there is no magic formula to capturing it, one can greatly increase one chance of capturing a Ditto by identifying which Pokemon Ditto could transform and specifically focus on capturing those Pokemons (I got mine within 2 days of 5th Quest).

Gen 1: Pidgey, Ratatta, Zubat and Gastly
Gen 2: Yanma, Hoothoot and Sentret
Gen 3: Zigzagoon, Taillow. Gulpin and Whismur

Gastly is one of the Pokemon Ditto may be transformed into.  So there might be a chance you might get a Ditto while hunting for 10 Ghost-Type Pokemons.

5. Join the worldwide celebration of Kanto Region Pokemons

A Mythical Discovery (4/8):  Earn the Kanto Silver Medal
A Mythical Discovery (5/8):  Catch 10 Ghost-Type Pokémons
A Mythical Discovery (7/8):  Earn a Kanto Gold Medal

From 10 April to 17 April 2018, there is a worldwide celebration of Pokemon originally found in Kanto Region.

There would be more appearance of Kanto Pokemons in the wild, double the candy rewarded per catch and more Kanto Pokemon such as Aerodactyl, Snorlax in raid battles.

It would be a good opportunity to ride on this celebration to unlock the following tasks above.  On top of that, personally, in my area, i am able to collect sufficient Machops and Nidoran to upgrade to Machamp and Nidoking respectively. I also got to stock up on those rarer found Pokemons eg. Vulpix, Ponyta, abra and etc.

6. Start collecting Berrys (Razz Nanab Berry or Pinap)

A Mythical Discovery (7/8):  Catch 50 Pokémon using a Berry

Though berrys are not hard to come by, it is frustrating to be low on berry when you need one. Especially in this Kanto celebration when there are so many Pokemon to catch.  So be sure to keep track of your berry supply.
